Tonight TCM showed 2001, A Space Odyssey. That movie came out in 1968, and by then I was getting ready to make my move into radio.
2001 was 33 years into the future, and I couldnt imagine where I'd be at age 51. Like most teenagers, I had no idea, or thought about becoming "an old man". Well... it's now almost a decade BEYOND 2001, and quite amazing at how fast it all went by. Older people say this, but you have no idea of what it means until it happens.
It's now 2010, and 33 MORE years into the future is just as unimaginable. In 2043 I'll be long dead and someone else will be lamenting the same post.
In the meantime, I find it hard to believe that I've lived well beyond an "into the future" Science Fiction movie.

Sadly, Arther C. Clark was more into Science than fiction... meaning 2001 was where we should have been a decade ago, but instead the space program was gutted, moon exploration (and beyond) became frivolous, and here we sit... Earthbound.
I saw a similar commentary once on Stargate SG-1. If we hadn't spent 800 years in the dark ages, where science and astronomy were considered "heresy", where would our planet be today?
We live in a society in which science is scoffed at by both the high and low.
The smart kids at school get bullied and people doubt anything that is real science in favor of religious fervor and pop fantasies.
Think of the posters on here, a group, while not the sharpest knives in the drawer, share in common a profession that relies on technology. Yet many of the members here decry the very scientific principles that are the underpinning of the industry in which they work.
