Stanfill Memorial Show on WFGH

With the loss of Vernon Stanfill in October 2009 the time slot for long-running WFGH-FM program CUD Radio Network has been filled with recordings of his shows dating back to the mid-1970s. On Friday, January 8, 2010 – that will change.

Family, friends and co-workers of Vernon will gather at WFGH and memorialize him with a live edition of his classic, local oldies show. WFGH founder Keith Spears will be there along with a host of others. We will celebrate Vernon’s life, laugh through great memories and play the music that he loved so. We won't do the show justice - it was his - but we are going to give it a heck of a shot.

Many of you knew Vernon and may want to join us. We will be at the WFGH studios, ten miles south of Fort Gay, WV on Route 52, beginning at 7:00 PM. We will roll on until about midnight and all are welcome. If you can’t be there and would like to listen you can hear the show at 90.7 FM. If none of that works and you would like to share some thoughts or memories, please give us a call at 304-648-5752. We truly want to hear from anyone that wants to participate. It is going to be a fun, but certainly melancholy evening.

The WFGH transmitter is off the air so the Stanfill Memorial Show must be rescheduled. A Verizon tech mistakenly removed equipment from a switch station that sends audio to the transmitter. The equipment was cannibalized and new goods must be ordered. I'll let all know when we can pull this thing off.

Maybe we should encourage regulators to approve this Frontier deal after all!

Sorry but I don't know the details on the equipment. The gentleman who is covering engineering duties for WFGH (as a volunteer I might add - thanks Fred!) kept it simple for me as I totally lack a technical brain.

The Verizon guy went to the switch station, pulled the goods, took parts needed in another location and sent them there. Verizon leadership stumbled, stammered, sweated and then ordered new stuff.

I agree that Frontier could be a real problem here in WV. I have dealt with them in 911 center operations and some of their folks seem to be less than stellar with advanced equipment. Interestingly, the Frontier folk have said more than once "I'm gonna have to call a buddy at Verizon and see what he thinks about this." I can't wait until that guy (and those like him) are in charge. It'll be a blast.

The court-ordered breakup of the Bell System marked the beginning of the end of the telephone company as a reliable and trusted friend that offered bulletproof service from Main Street to Miller's Hollow. We are reaping what we sowed back in 1984, when a judge ruled in favor of almost unbridled capitalism vs. a regulated monopoly. We destroyed the best electronic communication system in the world to please a handful of entrepreneurs.

The wireline telephone companies couldn't care less about things like residential phone lines and single pair dedicated control loops out in the middle of nowhere. They are more worried about morphing into a backhaul service for the cellular telephone and broadband industries.

WHTN-13 (Now WOWK) got its first two color VTR's and WKEE got a new production board because C & P cut the wrong cable. (Just happened to be my neighbor) This is much worse than that! This was ignorance of an employee. File against Verizon and demand damages! There is no excuse for this. PERIOD

Can somebody let me know what was removed from the studio by Verizon

It's a possibility I just may have what is needed is the old telco supply stash it I could
send down there to help out
