Job Offered

If it's about broadcasting, radio, TV, satellite, cable, this is where to talk about it.

I was hoping once i hit my mid-40s, I would have settled down and went with the flow...sadly, I think that stage was in my mid-twenties. (Is this that middle-age crisis thing I've always teased others about? Karma's a biotch. )
I'm there with you, Rock.

For me, it's a treacherous combination of looking back at your life.
All the wrong turns you made. Poor choices. Wasted time. Chasing dreams.
The opportunities that were there but were missed back when such choices were simpler and affected fewer people.
Watching younger people with less experience or more education or an insider's ticket pass you by.
Then combine the ticking of life's clock.
A realization that you aren't 25 anymore.
Medical problems loom now and in the future.
Friends your age and just a little older are passing away.
Your children are growing up much too quickly.
A feeling that you'd better do it now (whatever "it" is) or there may not be another opportunity.

It is government work, so they really don't expect too much.
Office politics is rampant. You can play that as a game.
Managers are obsessed with their power and keeping their
place in the pecking order. Some do their jobs too.
Any kind of decision is hard to find. Managers are graded on total mistakes
so if they do nothing and make no decisions, they make no mistakes.
Micromanaging can be a problem.
The morning shift is a great one as most of your day is complete
before any of the decision avoiders show up. Free parking.
Food provided during fund raising which seems to go on forever. Donuts.
Most of the regular employees are very good. The managers are, for the most part,
academic types. Baffled by technology and without strong personnel skills.
The past Executive Director ruled by tantrums directed at her personal staff.
New guy actually has done useful work in his life. As I understand, things have
gotten much better over the past several years. Lightened up.
No push-ups or running around at high port.
This sounds like my current job. Except for the donuts.
We have to buy our own.

Ha HA! Simply finding a Heck's sign would be a real accomplishment.
Aircheck? You'd make a great board op.

Ohio University's NPR is pretty cool stuff.
I listen occasionally when I can.
How is West Virginia's Public Radio content different?

I was in the Huntington/Ashland area yesterday and caught a listen at a student station.... not sure if it was marshall or athens I was listening to, but either way these kids should have alot more to learn before they're set loose on air, even in an educational setting....
Doesn't MSNBC stand for the Media that Spins the News for Barrack's Cabinet?

How to get into radio in Huntington, circa 1979:

Start at WCAK or WIRO or WNST.
Run the board for the Sunday morning church shows.
Work for the midnight shift jock when he gets fired, quits, or goes on vacation.
Work hard and land a weekend shift playing music. Woo-hoo!
Listen to the big boys on WLS or WCFL or WLW or WOWO.
Take notes. Learn how it all flows together. Try to be like John Records Landecker or Larry Lujack.
Get valuable input from your PD and the folks at your own station.
Aircheck yourself a lot and work on your weaknesses.
Send out tapes and resumes everywhere.
Get a job at a larger station.
Work wherever and whenever for whatever they'll pay.
Work your way up.
Take a midnight or evening on-air shift fulltime. Woo-hoo!
Send out tapes and resumes everywhere.
Get a job at a larger station.
(Repeat)

How to get into radio in Huntington, circa 2009:

Get a board op job babysitting six computer hard drives.

Go to Marshall and work at WMUL.
