Re: Top 10 New Vehicles Purchased During Cash for Clunkers
Every Top-Dog in business eventually gets fat and lazy and greedy it seems. (Detroit for instance)
There's always an underdog waiting in the wings to make a better product in order to dethrone them.
The biggest issue for these big proud companies is the inability to cut back when necessary and re group. They see this as a sign of weakness. They are much too big and important to appear weak. So, like GM and many other companies, they take their problems right over the cliff in a mass suicide instead of addressing the issues upfront. This "could" happen to Toyota or any other company for that matter. But I don't think they're that stupid myself.

Re: Top 10 New Vehicles Purchased During Cash for Clunkers
The problem that Detroit car makers have, is that the public perception of their cars
overpowers the reality of the facts. Detroit MAY have some well-built, reliable cars.
The public remembers the Pintos, Vegas and other pieces of crap that they bought.
If the public purchased a Camry or Civic in the meantime and it performed wonderfully,
that memory would amplify the perceived poor quality of Detroit cars.
I wonder if Detroit can last long enough to outlive that legacy.

The fact that you could get a factory built V8 Vega made it one of the most cool cars that people were ashamed to own.genlock wrote:The public remembers the Pintos, Vegas and other pieces of crap that they bought.

Re: Top 10 New Vehicles Purchased During Cash for Clunkers
.................AND TO GIVE YOU THE RESULTS OF THE CASH FOR CLUNKERS:
A vehicle at 15 mpg and 12,000 miles per year uses 800 gallons a year of gasoline.
A vehicle at 25 mpg and 12,000 miles per year uses 480 gallons a year.
So, the average clunker transaction will reduce US gasoline consumption by 320 gallons per year.
They claim 700,000 vehicles – so that's 224 million gallons / year.
That equates to a bit over 5 million barrels of oil.
5 million barrels of oil is about ¼ of one day's US consumption.
And, 5 million barrels of oil costs about $350 million dollars at $75/bbl.
So, we all contributed to spending $3 billion to save $350 million.
How good a deal was that ???

And if everybody only drives those cars for one year, that's all it will make. Of course if they drive them for 7- 8 years, well, you can figure it out.
Not to mention the jobs restored at the more than half a dozen auto plants that re-opened. God forbid we start building cars in America again.

Thank goodness that Toyota, Nissan and Honda are built here in the USA by non-union workers.

Apparently General motors has finally developed a car that will last 60 plus days before falling apart.
