Each year I travel to Europe and eat 3 times a day at area restaurants. Almost without fail, you will be given a side of boiled potatoes as part of your meal. This I always look forward to this because I love the many ways that they fix boiled potatoes.... and it always reminds me of home when I was a kid.
What happened in America? All you get here in most restaurants is:
1.... French Fries
2....Baked potatoes
3... Mashed potatoes (and 99% of the time these are horrible INSTANT potatoes)
Is it just so time consuming to peel and boil a lousy potato that we cant get them anymore? Sad.

i saw this post for a second and thought something totally different, I havent had a real restaurant experience in years... I did have boiled potatoes just the other day though.

So did I, fearpeddler. I thought it might have been an Andy Rooney tribute-type thing. Either that or a slow news day!
But while we're on the topic, here are my two cents: I wonder if maybe it's a consideration of time. It takes a bit longer to boil potatoes to doneness than it does to steam some carrots or green beans or spinach in a microwave oven. And, of course, there's the prep time of peeling them (although, I've had them unpeeled and they're still quite wonderful--dare I say, even better). Of course, pre-peeled potatoes are available for purchasing, so maybe that's not the issue, either.
I must agree about instant mashed potatoes--convenient, but for the most part, horrid. Usually not as flavorful as the containers in which they're packaged.
Last time I had boiled potatos in a restaurant was in 1999. And it was the last time I saw them on a menu.
Last time I had boiled potatos... This past winter Mom made a great dish by boiling potatos in chicken stock. Delicious. Prior to that, last summer they were a staple because I had a good source of little red potatos.
And why is the dictionary in Firefox set to use "potatoes" and not "potatos"???????

OK, so does anybody have any particular favorite way(s) to prepare them that they'd like to share? The aforementioned chicken stock is always a tasty addendum. How about herbs? Spices? Other culinary creativity?
