GEORGE TOWN: The Commercial Crime Department personnel are monitoring the illegal radio frequency of the walkie-talkies used by pirated discs tontos to track down their operations.

Commercial Crime Department chief Asst Comm Roslee Chik said they were working closely with Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and other amateur radio associations such as the Northen Region Malay Amateur Radio Association (Astra) to curb the sale of pirated discs.

“We might work out with them to see in what way they can help in the ‘war’.

“We are sending a message to the tontos out there to be aware. Now that we are monitoring their movements, they might want to consider in getting a new job before it is too late,” he said when contacted Wednesday.

ACP Roslee said it was believed that there were about 100 tontos in the state who were hired at RM40 per night to sit somewhere near the police stations.

“These tontos would monitor the police’s movement and inform their counterpart before any raid is being conducted,” he said.

He was commenting on a raid on Monday night at the Batu Feringghi night market where 20,000 pirated discs were seized.

“Four men including an Indonesian foreigner were arrested and we’ve managed to seized three walkie-talkies as well,” he said.

ACP Roslee said they have handed the walkie-talkies to the MCMC to investigate whether the frequency used is registered.
