Actually, I'm one of the few people that never liked Harvey, I guess...although we made a shitload of money off him over the years. I just never got it.

He apparently made a lot of people a lot of money. I still remember back in the 50's when he must have kept the Banker's Life and Casualty Company in business. And when he put his credibility on the line (!) claiming that a Chevrolet Lumina was superbly quiet and perhaps the finest motorcar ever built.

I don't know about being "the finest motorcar ever built", but the 1996-98 era Luminas were hellacious little vehicles. We owned one. They were great on gas, seated more people comfortably than most other cars their size, were quiet, and went everywhere in the snow and ice with very little trouble. With sadness, we replaced the Lumina six years after purchase due to high miles and a growing family. Biggest problem: As the Luminas aged, the paint literally came off in giant flakes. Vehicle still ran great, it just looked like a MackDowell County welfare limosine. I have often regretted trading that car.

Back to topic ... I hated listening to Paul Harvey when I was younger. My grandparents listened to his radio program daily and seemed to hang on every word. I just didn't get it. To me, he was just an old man with a funny way of elongating and pronouncing words. As I grew older, I really started to dig on Harvey's broadcasts. The stories he told were classic Americana: simple, from-the-heartland prose that always had an emotional "hook". Paul Harvey's letter-perfect sense of timing and articulation proved him to be a truly gifted old school radio person -- someone capable of painting an entire story for the mind's eye to see with the simple and eloquent words he chose and how he chose to say them. We'll miss you, Mr. Harvey. Your shoes will be difficult to fill.

I never sought out his show on purpose, but if I found it while scanning through the dial, I would listen.

It wasn't so much what he said, but how he said it. His delivery was unmatched. Still is.

Mr. Harvey certainly deserves our respect and admiration. Indeed, he balanced the uniqueness that broadcasters seek to have with the ability to make the bean counters happy. Very happy.

It is, then, with no disrespect that I note that I (skeptic that I am) often wondered how Mr. Harvey was the only radio person that seemed to find available some of the stories that he graced us with over the years. Surely, he couldn't have been privvy to so many things over the years.

I was in North Carolina at WFTC am in 1960 and Paul Harvey flew his plane into Kinston for an award dinner. He did all his radio shows live from our studios. We had a knife switch on the wall where he was to turn on our new Gates transmitter (the switch was fake). The board op was to run the audio at 20% and when the switch was thrown was to run 100%. during the excitement to get the new transmitter up and on we forgot to set the modulator overloads and when modulation hit 100% it went down. Paul joked about this on is evening show. He was a GREAT guy, and we felt like we could believe everything he said.. not like the news people today. He was just like when he was on the air when in person. He will be missed.

Museum To Name Venue After Harvey

The MUSEUM OF BROADCAST COMMNUNICATIONS will name its special events venue after PAUL HARVEY and his wife LYNNE "ANGEL" HARVEY, the museum's Founder and President BRUCE DUMONT announced in a statement.

"PAUL HARVEY was the greatest of American broadcasters -- a master of words and speech who brought intellect, dignity and humor to each broadcast and demonstrated an ability to connect to his audience for over six decades. PAUL HARVEY was a proud salesman of products and ideals who had the good fortune to share his life with a personal and professional partner of unlimited grace and class," DUMONT said. "In memory of PAUL and his late wife ANGEL, the Museum of Broadcast Communications in Chicago will name its special events venue the PAUL AND ANGEL HARVEY CENTER. It will be the site of future RADIO HALL OF FAME inductions. Fans and industry leaders are invited to share their respect with a memorial donation to complete the Center at http://www.Museum.TV.

Harvey Funeral Scheduled For Saturday

HARVEY's funeral has been set for SATURDAY at FOURTH PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH in CHICAGO, with visitation on FRIDAY at DRESCHLER, BROWN AND WILLIAMS funeral home in OAK PARK, IL. Memorials in lieu of flowers are being taken by the LYNN COOPER HARVEY FOUNDATION, 1035 Park Ave., RIVER FOREST, IL 60305.

The late ABC Radio Networks newsman’s son, Paul Jr. will have a major say in answering that question and determining what happens with Paul Harvey News & Comment and The Rest Of The Story, the daily feature written by Harvey Jr. since it’s debut in 1976. While this week’s regularly scheduled Paul Harvey broadcasts feature tributes to the iconic broadcaster following his death last Saturday, ABCRN spokesman Louis Adams reports that long-term plans for Harvey’s programs have not yet been finalized. “We will discuss that with Paul Jr. when the time is appropriate,” Adams told the New York Daily News. “There’s no replacing Paul Harvey.
