State looks to launch its own online social networking site
Board will be support system for students who can question their peers, moderate site

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Look out Facebook and MySpace.
Gov. Joe Manchin's office is working to start a secure social networking forum for West Virginia youth on the state's Web site.
First Lady Gayle Manchin said the idea for the forum came from a low-income student in the Beckley area.
Manchin said she was there last year for a community meeting in her capacity as co-chair of the governor's 21st Century Jobs Cabinet, a group that works to improve the state's educational system leading to an improved economy.
The governor created the group in 2006 by executive order.
During the Beckley meeting, the student told the group that she often felt at a loss as she navigated through school and that she sometimes felt like she was being "talked down to" by adults, Manchin said.
The student suggested that some kind of peer support system would be a good thing for students to have.
"I think as a state and part of the educational community, we wondered how can we provide more resources and support for them," Manchin said. "A social network would be one of those ways."

So is this a real social networking site like Linked In or is it a forum like WVBROADCASTING.NET???

If our school system is typical, NO social networking sites are allowed. I don't see how this will be any different, regardless of whose idea it is.
