Listener chimes in on AM radio

Two suggestions: a better car radio or simply an AM car antenna upgrade - check http://www.ccrane.com.

There's a thought that has been on my mind. Name a good car radio? Obviously anything is going to be better than my factory rig, but how do I go about getting something that's really good for terrestrial radio reception?

I'd start with the antenna. Those 28" standard antennas (antennae?) are for FM. CCrane sells some AM-oriented units that do nothing for the Cool Factor of your vehicle but will increase your AM reception.

I've had zero luck with any kind of signal booster, AM and/or FM, but in fairness it's been ten years since I tried one. Any new stuff that works?

Best reception I've encountered is Bose radios found in Nissan Maximas and similar vehicles. Ohhh...

Uh. Now they've gone and done it. The WVU Spring Scrimmage will now be available on Metronews for any affilliate that wants it. Will a WVU Football scrimmage get any listeners in Moorefield?

WV Power is on WCMI 1340 AM, day or night, when the 10 a.m. games were bumping mid-day talk and evening bumping ESPN programming. Power bumped only five or six times so far.

On WRVC 930 AM, we did 12 Marshall C-USA Games just like the last two years before from Appalachian Power Park. We then carried all six MU games live from New Orleans and C-USA Tournament for the first time, and it went very well.

So far this year, we did all major bowl games including national championship game; MU basketball - all games plus weekly coaches show at Gino's and weekend post-game shows after home games at Giovanni's; MU women's basketball about four games; NCAA basketball from Westwood One every weekend and all NCAA Tournament with most games on WRVC, but a few moved to WCMI when conflicted with local programming on RVC.

We did six Huntington Heroes games until the checks quit clearing. We did hour pre-game and carried MU Spring Game. We carry Sunday night baseball and NBA regular season/playoffs/finals. We did the Kentucky Derby and The Belmont. We carry Craftsman Truck Races from NASCAR, and carried the Indy 500 plus the Stanley Cup Championships on WCMI, bumping the Power occasionally.

Coming up is rest of NBA Finals, College World Series June 23-24-25, All-Star Game and Home Run Derby in July and possibly the Olympic Updates from Westwood One in August, before we start with Marshall football, plus NCAA football and NFL football from both Westwood One and Sports USA Radio in August. We'll also have Spring Valley H.S. football and basketball.

Our only non-sports broadcasts are daily 10 a.m.-1 p.m. (Hoppy and Jean Dean, and their numbers stand up pretty well); Saturday mornings 8-10 a.m., following WV Outdoors, and on Sunday morning 7-9 a.m. its "Big Bands and More," with Big Al; and church programming 9-10:30 a.m. on Sunday. We also had Jason Toy live at Cabell Co. Courthouse for primaries, with cut-ins from MetroNews, and will cover the general election in November same way.

The great thing is the sports are selling the AM for the first time in my decade here, and that is a nice trend. Wednesday's this summer, we have sold 12 or so shows all over Tri-State with Chuck Landon of The Herald-Dispatch joining me on the Insider Sportsline on WRVC 4-5 p.m./Insider Statewide on ESPN 1490-Charleston and ESPN 930-Huntington, plus up on bird via ISP Sports from 5-6 p.m. until August. We may even feature Chuck in a different show in the fall. On Thursday's, sports show live from Max & Erma's in Pullman Square for Summer Concert Series, so we get out and about in summer. We have two sponsors for sports show, Esquire C.C. and Steve Jarrell's Law Office after spending Monday's at The Union all spring.
