I have seen the same issues in the Philadelphia area and have noted that my employer has used outsourcing to bring more work into our department because the resources to fill those positions are not in the marketplace.

I get the impression that Corporate America as a whole is starting to view Americans as a bunch of skill-less can kickers.

If this is the case, then shouldn't we do something about it, instead of bringing in illegals who are even more skill-less, except that they will be trained and work for a far lesser wage?

I always thought that WV and similar states would be a great place to "outsource" call centers, light manufacturing, and the like.

It's amazing that Corporations outsource jobs halfway around the world while a huge untapped labor pool continues to waste away in Appalachia...

I can tell you that last week we had no fewer than six different companies advertising with us, running ads BEGGING people to come to work. The jobs start at $15 and hour and go up to $30 and $35. The problem? Very few people in southern WV can pass a drug test. Am I the only drunk left?

Not for the guys that work out of the labor halls in major cities. Tell the Iron Workers build skyscrapers that they are lazy and incompetent. The same goes the cement mason and brick layers that put down the foundations for all the structures in town.

I have seen two unions. Those that shield incompetent factory workers and those that give craftsmen and artisans the ability to perform free lance work with similar benefits as salary sucks like me.

Which one covers convention and tradeshow workers? Those m*****f*****s are absolutely worthless pieces of shit... and I've compared east coast (Philly) and west coast (San Fran). Not a lick of difference.

And how about AFTRA? They stayed totally silent while more and more of their stations converted to voicetracking and satellite, and finally (when the damage was done), they come out with the stand of "It's OK."

So I've got some experience with unions... they seem worthless to me.

Yes, Gen, they are. No, these are all in the mining industry. People here are bitching because a great number of Mexicans are coming here and "taking our jobs", however the companies can't hire the locals here because the majority of applicants, yes, I said MAJORITY, can't pass a pre-employment drug test. The owner of the local Radio Shack told me he has had to fire several people within the last week to 10 days because they were on drugs.

AFTRA only stood up and protected one market in the US from Voice Tracking and that was NYC.

That statement just gave me the same gut feeling I had in Vegas and parts of southern WV scarred from the days of Balwin-Felts security.

I have to agree on all of those damn trade show workers here in Philly as well as Chicago and LA. I watched trucks back up for two miles at the McCormack Center in Chicago as the crews to load trucks were late and then slow as smoke off a turd at the industrial automation show. I just watched as every company there was eating demurage charges for stalling the movement of the trucks. Ditto goes for the show that I was at in LA.

In Philly, there are many unions at the shows at the convention center, but primarily they IBEW workers and Carpenters. If you noticed, I did not include them on my list of "artisans" or those that take more risk than 99% of us at their jobs.
