Good promotion

A station in Fredericksburg, VA did this...

It concerned 1 dollar bills. You had to have the numbers 1, 0, 1, and 5 in the serial number in any order (guess what the station frequency was??). You won $101.50 if you were the right caller and had a bill with the numbers. On a regular day, you could double your money if you had the secret number as another number in the serial number (the number could be another 1, 0, or 5 too). You could double again and get to $406. On Thursdays, you could go for $1,000 if you had a third bonus number. At least I think that's how it went. The only problem is that it was all cash. But the thing is, it was done by a non-CC station. I thought it was a good promotion. They did it at a set time in the morning, once in middays, and once in evening drive. The latter two were floaters. Yeah, it's probably been done before, but I had never heard it before this one.

I used to listen to them for OHP on the weekends. They aired it for about 2 years until another PD came along and promptly axed it for an 80's show. Bastard.

am i the only one feeling old because of this "what once was old is new again" scenario that just flashed in front of my eyes???

which brings up a question i've pondered before (maybe this should be an all new thread, but i'll ask anyway). how soon is too soon to bring something back? ie... contest, format, fashion, burn-out old jock, ex girlfriend...

i've heard the saying before "there are no new ideas, just variations of old ones". i personally don't believe that, but...

this thread just brought that question back in my head.

It's funny you mention that.....just in the past few months, I realized "each new generation needs a __________ ."

Many things I've wanted to do or thought about doing and then rejected because they've already been done or are being done are now being done successfully by other people....those people have been either too dumb to know "that's been thought of...that's been done" or smart enough to realize "each new generation needs a __________ because each new generation thinks it's figuring that out or needing that for the first time."

it's like you were in my brain.... arp, please stay out of my brain.
we had an idea come across here at the station last year that eventually got shot down by upper management which those exact thoughts came to mind, and i wrestled with them for days... and when i was asked my thoughts on the subject i STILL could not decide. so i presented both arguments and stated that i could not decide on one over the other because i would have been guessing at that point. i'm usually a very decisive and opinionated person, but i was really stumped.

WQBE does this all the time for the book it's the Rabbit dollar bill swap or something I can't remember the name off the top of my head. You had to be caller 20 with a $1 with a 975 and if you had more numbers we called out the more you one and then at the end of the book we put a bill into circulation and posted the number on the website. If you found it you won like a grand or something. So it has been done in WV.

Not true. Just yesterday I said "Welcome to your Tuesday." See why that was cool? I did show prep and looked up what day of the week it was. Then at 4PM in the afternoon I gave my listeners valuable information they may not have known yet (with it being a different day than it was the day before). That makes me a valuable resource to them. Also, if you were paying attention you would have noticed that I added the word "your" so it was personal for each listener. You should always talk like you are talking to one person.

I did all of that in one short sentence and every single bit of it was original.

Next week I'll be giving away tickets to an auto show. I'm going to take calls on our phone. I think I will award the tickets to the tenth person who calls.

I also found a calendar that tells me all kind of important shit that happened on that date in the past. It also has a list of celebrity and historical figure birthdays on it! This is a gold mine!

All of that shit is original. It's originaler than a motherfucker.

Well, sure! It's because you were voicetracked!

...which is why, when going to dinner with someone, I always say, "welcome to your dinner," when meeting that person outside and then say, "welcome to your local (name of restaurant)," as I hold the door and then say, "welcome to your (day of week) evening alone," as we part after dinner. Sometimes, I'll follow that person to his car and say, "welcome to your Honda," as he pops the locks....

It makes me appear really friendly and popular! If you don't believe me, walk around all day speaking only in radio DJ phrases! People love it!

Yet more reasons I worship Jay and Arp. It's that sort of personal communication that makes this business great. That's why I always say the time "It's 7:46, 14 til 7", because that's how everyone speaks in every day life. It's so relatable.

Its a real treat to hear the time on the radio... especially given the fact that the time is usually on the radio tuner.

I love it when the Time and Temp. carts where recorded during the summer months and then used in the winter months when the jock has a cold.

Sure pulls that whole "live" theory, doesn't it?
