What a storybook ending to the whole DickRod incident. I am so happy for the Mountaineers! I also think Stewart is the right guy at the right time for this position. His best coaching move at this point should be to surround himself with excellent people, including a few assistant coaches who are exceptionally strong in areas where Mr. Stewart is weak.

My guess is he will make it 4 of the 5 years and then both he and WVU will agree on a buyout for the remaining year.
Well said, webdesignguy. There was no one better on the face of the Earth to coach the Mountaineers in the Fiesta Bowl than Bill Stewart. I actually believe ANY other person would have guided WVU to a loss.

I pray here that he proves me wrong, but I also feel that he has one year of success in him and that's it. Big season next year and then the second season is the key. If the momentum and the wins have diminished...he should be gone after two. But his legend has been built on one game and that's all anybody will remember...

How's he going to do that when he, himself, is making what a really good assistant would merit??

There's something very odd about this hiring.....it really looks like they've just bought themselves a year to find and try to convince somebody else......

Excellent point. Coach Stewart has already "made his mark", so to speak, by taking the Mountaineers to the Fiesta Bowl and pulling off a big win against higher than normal odds. His place in WVU Sports history has already been made.

I wonder if Stewart has any long term plans to be the head coach there, or if this was a gentleman's agreement of sorts to act as a placeholder until someone can be hired to take over the Head Coach's position. Not everyone wants to be the Top Guy -- some are content to work hard under a good leader in their own area of expertiese.

In any case, whether it's temporary or long term, Stewart should work to build the best program he can, including trying to attract top notch coaching talent. The money and salary issues are something that should be discussed *soon* with the top dogs in the WVU Athletic Department.
