Why I Love Small Town Radio Part 76

This is a good place to drop general and weird news, entertainment, and general show prep material that might be interesting to air talent or producers. Hot dog threads ALWAYS welcome.

Why I Love Small Town Radio Part 76

Post by Dave Allen »

Last two calls received in last five minutes.

1. Who is going to play in the Super Bowl this year?

2. Can you please announce that we need someone to dig a grave?

Have fun, boys (and girl)

1. Just say, "WVU". 6 out of 10 would believe you and be content with that answer.

2. Tell them a well-placed cardboard sign near the Peach Creek / Mill Branch bridge will get them six backhoes in their driveway in 15 minutes.
Especially if they have a washer/dryer set they need hauled-off.

Offering to share a case of beer with the diggers will also do the trick.

In a lot of cases in Logan County, when they say "grave diggers", they mean exactly that. Private grave plots could be way up the mountain or somewhere else a backhoe couldn't go. Pall-Bearers are needed to haul the casket up to these places without aid of a wheeled dolly. Imagine trying to get enough guys around a cheap casket with a 500lb bubba inside it and getting that up some muddy hillside?

Since moving to Pittsburgh there are things that I miss about small town radio...
One of those things is "The Italian Hour" on WRLF/WTCS in Fairmont. Even though Big Nick has passed, they still run tapes of the broadcast each week. Running that show was my first radio gig and by the end of my time there, I became a big fan of the music. While there are other shows that are similar, there's only one "Italian Hour" and only one Big Nick.

Much like our "Friendly Neighbor Show" bluegrass show Saturday mornings from 8:30 till 9:30 am. For the jock its cool, since all you have to do is push play (its on cassette!) The show is "self-contained", meaning they do all the sponsorships (and there are a ton) themselves. The show is so friggin' popular.

...and the families usually live adjacent to the cemetery.

...with well-water.

When they say, "She's got a little grandma in her", they mean it literally.

Yes, The Friendly Neighbors made the gradual move away from reel-to-reel and into state-of-the-art cassette a couple of years ago!

My dog wandered off. Can you announce a lost pet?
And I have a couple snow tires I'd like to trade for a lawnmower.

One day on WBTH's "Tradio", I had a man call in with "two joy boxes. $75 each" and a number. I thought nothing of it. The 15 minute show had no more than closed than the sheriff called. Several thaonsnds of dollars of mining equipment had been stolen in Wyoming county....including two "Joy" loaders.

The dumb ass gave his real number. Case closed.

Many police departments monitor such programs for just this kind of thing.

Tell bout it em' Dave!

We once had a call where a guy had "a big box of a-dult movies fir sell". The host of "Tradin' Post" at the time told him he couldn't sell those on the air. The very next caller wanted to sell a 12 gauge shotgun. Now, which is worse?

Once while working at a station in Ohio this happened. On our noon news we had as segment called "bulletin board" where people could write to us with items they had to sell. We would read a few on the air each day. Once day a listener had a .22 for sale. I had no more finished reading the segment when the GM busted through the door to ask me what the hell I was doing?

Apparently in Ohio it is illegal for anyone other than a licensed gun dealer to sell firearms.

Who knew?
