Radio station says DJ is suspended for playing Michigan fight song over and over

A Charleston radio personality was suspended from his job for refusing to tone down his on-air excitement over former WVU head football coach Rich Rodriguez's decision to take the head job at the University of Michigan.

Coach Kidd, a Michigan native, co-hosts the morning talk show on Electric 102.7 FM. For the past couple days, he's dominated the show's content with his feelings on how Rodriguez's job change will be a boon to the Wolverines football program -- much to the dismay of listeners.

After playing the Wolverines' fight song for a fourth time this morning, Coach Kidd was yanked off the air.

"Basically, it boils down to insubordination," said Wade Hill, the station's program manager. "He was just taking it a little too far."

Hill said the decision to suspend Coach Kidd came from upper-level management about 7:40 a.m. today. Hill said he's been trying to work something out with the station's administrators to see if he can get Coach Kidd back on the air.

Listeners have been complaining that Coach Kidd's extravagant support of Rodriguez's controversial decision is disrespectful to the state.

A great many WVU fans were outraged after word got out on Sunday that Rodriguez had accepted the Michigan job.

Considering the fragile emotions in the state this week, Hill said Coach Kidd was warned three times to change the subject away from his glee over Rodriguez's move.

But this morning, he refused to stop playing the Wolverines' fight song.

"He just kept playing it over and over again," Hill said.

Hill said he had mixed feelings about the suspension, which is indefinite. Hill said Coach Kidd was going against the flow of the show, but he could have been just being a showman and trying to drum up some controversy.

In the end, managers saw Coach Kidd's behavior as turning his back on his listeners and West Virginia, Hill said.

Coach Kidd could not be reached for comment today.

If I was old coach kidd I'd be talkin with a lawyer, sounds like he has a reason to get rich now, thats wrong on soooo many levels,you people as dj's are expected to show a little of your personalities on air and cause a little trouble on occaasion, true he probably got a bunch of fans whining, but he coulda spun that situation in 4 or 5 different directions, they didnt need to do that, its a childish move on the part of management....

Folks... this is a publicity stunt (and a damn good one) orchestrated by Bristol management or by Coach Kidd or by both. Nothing more to see here. Let's move on.

for some reason though I could see some redneck manager who" lubs his eers and wudnt hyar nyone badmoufem" goin apeshit and callin one of the higher ups, kinda like the nappy headed thing again..... you know, something trivial taken and blown completely up into some big crapstorm when it barely qualifies as a fart to begin with..

a couple years ago I might have ended there quickly, but I've noticed the newspapers around here dont care to attack tv on a whim, so what would make them any less critical of radio..

The proverbial "anonymous source" says it was a stunt. When the Daily Mail suspends somebody for getting suckered, THAT will probably be real, though.

My initial reaction was : stunt. But I don't know. If you listen to their stations, what is considered "edgy humor" isn't even close to edgy. This may have been too hot to handle for some of the folks in that company.

If it is just a stunt it's hilarious that the paper ran with it.

If it's not a stunt and he is in trouble, I hope he sends clips to all of the stations in Michigan.

Actually, "The Victors" is one of collegiate America's great all-time fight songs. Notre Dame, Ga Tech, Ohio State and the Texas A&M Aggies are other greats. Most are forgettable.

Trust me, this is not a stunt. Coach is a Michigan NUT. I spent enough time in BBC to know how they operate, and this is not it. Hell, Z Rock wouldn't touch this one with a ten foot pole, and that goes triple for WVSR. I think when Zak chimes in, he will agree with me 100%.

Amen to that...but if its not a stunt, my theory is that some big time WVU supporter advertisers got pissy and started to complain. We all know how pushy sales weasals can be if we do something to piss off their clients. Much less a whole pack of clients.

Its one thing to tick off the listeners but its a whole nother(is that a word arp?) to piss off the all mighty advertisers.
