Bowden has been saying he wants to get back into coaching for the past several months, so this might be the best fit for him. I would say if he gets the gig, he'll stay a while.

BUT--I hear the guy Pastilong wants is Butch Jones from Central Michigan. He's an ex Rich Rod assistant, and knows the system that's already in place. Was WR coach for WVU from 05-06.

Why?
By sports editor Dave Poe in today's Parkersburg News:

PARKERSBURG —Rich Rodriguez doesn’t just owe West Virginia University $4 million, he owes its loyal supporters an explanation.

Why would you leave your alma mater, your home state university, your dream job, to go to a pressure-packed situation at Michigan to compete in a conference in which you have no ties, especially when you aren’t Michigan’s first or even its second choice?

Only one person can answer that and let’s hope he does. Otherwise, all we’ll have is a bunch of speculation and Lord knows we’ve had enough of that in the past 72 hours.

Then again, since Rodriguez told the media he was in Toledo to meet with his financial advisor, will any further statement from his lips be deemed credible in the Mountain State?

Word of Rodriguez’ departure, announced at a Sunday afternoon team meeting, had to feel like a gut punch to anyone involved with Mountaineer football.

Rodriguez was one of us. He was our guy. We told him as much last year when Alabama came courting. We increased his pay. We gave him job security. We gave him every tool for which he said he needed to bring that elusive national championship to Morgantown.

Now this.

When basketball coach John Beilein left for Michigan following last year’s NIT championship, not a single insider was surprised. Beilein had wore out his welcome with WVU’s administration. Besides, his pattern was to spend five years building a program and move on. Plus, he had no prior ties to WVU or the Mountain State.

This one hurts. As much as the loss to Pitt. This one is going to be taken personally by many West Virginia fans.

Other than the obvious question —why did Rodriguez leave —there are many others that need to be answered.

Who’s going to coach the Fiesta Bowl? Who’s going to be the next head coach?

And what about the recruits who have committed to WVU? Will they go elsewhere? Will any of them follow Rodriguez to Michigan?

As I said in Sunday’s column, West Virginia’s program is stronger than any one person.

We all wondered what would happen when Don Nehlen left. Rodriguez happened.

Now that Rodriguez has left, somebody else will happen.

And they may happen soon. If you recall, it didn’t take long to replace Beilein. WVU knew who it wanted — Bob Huggins —and it immediately went out and got him.

Since this resignation is so surprising, the timetable likely will be longer. But make no mistake, WVU is an attractive job that will cause a stir among the nation’s coaching elite.

Yes, it is time to move on. To get ready to play Oklahoma. To hire a new coach and a new staff. To begin yet another new era of Mountaineer football.

Before we do that, we’ll be subjected to watching Rich Rodriguez flash that winning smile while being introduced as the new head coach at Michigan, a scene that is sure to bring out a lot of emotions in those of us who are passionate about Mountaineer football.

Rodriguez will be paraded before a friendly press whose members will be anxious to start developing a relationship with their new head coach. I hope just one of them has the courage to ask that three-letter question: Why?

I know we all get excited about big time sports, but, really, is Rod's move any different than what we would do? You get a better offer, you're gone, right? And if the week before the deal is done, after you've already interviewed and you're 99 percent sure you have the gig, you're boss asks you if you're thinking of splitting. You say "no", because he might can your ass if you say yes. If the company decides to make a change, you think they'll give a damn about how much you want to be there. Nope, you're gone.
It's business, and loyalty only goes as far as the next payday. A person has to do what they believe is best for themselves, their family, and their career. No matter the company's name, be it Clear Channel, LM, or WVU, they will always act in their own best interest. You have to do the same. Rod goess 0-11 next year and he doesn't get to decide whether he's leaving or not.
We just went through this here with Jim Grobe at Wake Forest and the Nebraska job. People were going through the roof. Another morning show ripped him for three hours. I said basically what I wrote above and wished him the best. In the end, he decided to stay at Wake, because he thought it was best for his family.
So Rod goes, they'll hire somebody else and life will go on. Just like where you work.
And they'll still lose to Oklahoma!!!!!!!!

Wow... I wish my life was so complete and worry free that the only stress I experienced had to do with a college football coach taking a job somewhere else. Good lord.

Well said.

Similar to Bob Pruit's firing/quitting/retireing/whateverthefuckhappend, after a couple of seasons, it no longer matters.

I think that what we just witnessed goes well beyond the surface stuff...

That's all I'll say about that for now.

However, WVU and its fans are owed an explanation for such an abrupt departure. Why leave the team on its own in a major BCS bowl against a very formidable opponent? A game they backed into, for crying out loud?

At least when WVU gets crushed in front of a national audience, the media will let them off lightly this year.

I think leaving your head coaching position just weeks before the team plays in a Bowl game is about the shittiest, uncaring, disrespectful, spit-in-the-face and bite-the-hand-that-fed-you things a human being could do. It says a lot about Rich Rodriguez's character.

Even if a bigger school offered up more dollars, the RIGHT thing to do is finish the season at WVU, wrap up all the loose ends with coaches, players, and West Virginia athletic department higher-ups, then shake hands and head off to Michigan. The folks in Ann Arbor shouldn't expect a new coach to start until the current football season is over, and they should wonder about the integrity and character of one who'd leave another successful college program in the lurch just weeks before the big tournament.

Shitty. Shitty. Shitty.

from HuntingtonNews.net
EDITORIAL: Many WVU Fans May Be Saying 'Good Riddance' to Coach Rodriguez

It's deja vu all over again, only worse this Christmas for WVU football fans.

Coach Rich Rodriguez is leaving WVU immediately for the University of Michigan, the second WVU head coach to be lured away by that impressive Big Ten school. At the end of the last basketball season, John Beilein decided to head to Ann Arbor. Now Rodriguez will follow--immediately. He won't even be coaching his WVU team in the Fiesta Bowl. What a downer for the team and WVU fans alike.

Last year about this time, Rodriguez seriously flirted with the University of Alabama, which was looking for a new football coach. Instead of going to Alabama, Rodriguez parlayed the attention given him by Alabama into more pay and a contract extension at WVU. He then told the Wheeling News-Register: "I plan on being at West Virginia the rest of my career."

So much for grand sentiments.

Now a year later, Rodriguez's team fumbled away a shot at a National Championship by losing to a Pitt team with a very mediocre record this season. On top of that, Rodriguez embarrassed WVU with snide remarks recently about the University of Connecticut football team getting "Big East Champion" rings, too, since WVU's unfortunate loss to Pitt brought UConn a share of the Big East crown this year.

Following that loss to Pitt, is Rodriguez really in any position to deny UConn this distinction? Pettiness is never pretty, especially in a head football coach towards another team.

And now, for the piece de resistance, right before his battered team plays in a Fiesta Bowl against mighty Oklahoma, "Coach Rod" is packing his bags as fast as he can for Michigan. How's that for a morale booster from a native Marion County boy? WVU fans could probably feel a lot better about this year if their football team somehow mounted a good fight against the Sooners in Arizona at the turn of the New Year.

But the coach seems much more into himself than his team's redemption. Couldn't he have asked the Michigan officials to wait just a couple more weeks for an interview -- until after the Fiesta Bowl is over? Seemingly, this option never occurred to him. Rodriguez's wandering eye has become his trademark.

College football is big business these days, with coaches playing for multi-million dollar contracts. Certainly, being the head coach for the University of Michigan football team would be a serious career highlight for any man of Rodriguez's credentials. It's a long way from Salem and Glenville State to Big Ten football.

But having said that, the man doesn't seem to show much class to the fans who have come out to support him in a major way over his tenure at WVU. Constantly flirting with other schools at the end of the season leaves a bad taste in one's mouth. Leaving before the work is done at this year's Fiesta Bowl will probably make that bad taste permanent for many.

The combination of Rich Rodriguez's persistent interest in other schools and his recent complete flop with Pitt may make many West Virginia fans ready to say "Good riddance" to one of the school's most successful coaches.

Charming he ain't.
