What are oldies?

I my book an "oldies" target audience starts around the age of 40 (born 1967). The music influence starts at about age 10. Which means the "newest" old song should be from about 1977. So to keep it "fresh", an "oldies" format should play from 60 thru 79.

The problem is the perception of listening to an "oldies station" The very word "oldie" invokes grandma and her victrola. 40 somethings don't see themselves as "old". So they would rather hear "classic AC"! This was quickly seen here when I "tested" my New Oldies Show. The number one comment was "Why do you call it that?". Followed closely by "That song's not old....that's what I lisened to!"; Something Broadcasters should take into consideration when promoting an "oldies "station. I hope to take my "The New Oldies Show" weekly early next year and although the name will stay the same, it is a "Classic AC" program!

Of course the industry will disagree.

Ditto on a couple of salient points.

I was told once..and it only took once....'Don't mention 1) release date, 2) Don't use the term 'waaayyy back in yadda-yadda', and number 3) 'Sheesh, it seems like yesterday'.'

No one likes to be reminded they're growing older...unless they're 18.

I hope you don't mean this thread. This was more of me reading Big Nate and thinking "The radio folk would get a kick out of this", rather than an attempt to spark real discussion.

Oldie's has been dying off the Country due to the pepole for that certain graphic. Im glade to hear WCBS Oldie's 101.1 FM return to NewYork. The Format will be tweaking. I like hearing 60's stuff better thin poor old 70's Funk all day long.
