There is a difference between the two cars especially in how they steer. When you enter a long turn in a Corolla, the power steering wants to correct itself so you are fighting the wheel to hold the turn. That doesn't happen in the Civic. OTOH, the Civic's computer controlled transmission can do some funky things when it gears down while going down hill. This is by design but it can be a little unnerving.

These are two very different cars.

Buyer's remorse, perhaps? It happens to almost everyone several days after making a major purchase.

I have never driven a late-model Honda Civic, so I have no basis of comparison.

However, it is true that the Corolla's power steering does have a tendency to over correct, so you have to keep a firm grip on the steering wheel in a turn. That was one of the first thing I noticed when I got mine. But now, I'm really used to the "feel".

Buyer's remorse? Next time, go with a Scion coupe. You'll have a Toyota that looks like a fancy Honda.

Well, I still like our Corolla, so neener, neener. The only problem is it is really hard to keep it at 35. The difference in interior noise between that speed and 65 is negligible.

No friggin' fake!!! Took my first "extended trip" in the new ride yesterday (Walkersville, Ireland, Rock Cave...all the big cities) and noticed this a couple of times. I think I will "get used to it". Still like the car overall, but the next one will be another Honda...

As much as I hate to admit it, when I moved back to Orlando my roommates (mostly high-school cronies) got me caught up in the whole "Street Racing" gimmick for a couple of years.

Now I know you guys aren't doing any street racing in WV and I'm not even doing it anymore but here's my point: I drove domestics for years and swore to drive nothing else until I got sucked into racing. Then I went to Mitsubishi. I had two identical year and model Galants one right after the other and they are by far the best car I have ever seen or driven.

BUT two of my roommates had, believe it or not, a Toyota and a Civic. Jon owned the Civic and they were by far the most common around town and on the tracks. Those guys beat the HELL out of those Civics - I mean RIDICULOUS stuff. Drifting, power-sliding, jumps; they stripped the suspensions down to the frames, put OBSCENE perfromance parts on the engines... Those Civics were the closest thing to indestructible I have ever seen.

Fin (one of my other roommates) had the Toyota. It was new, he did race it but he babied it in comparison to the way we ran ours. I honestly can't tell you how many times he came home in a rental from the Toyota Dealership.

Again, I know you aren't looking to be in the Fast & the Furious 3 (Hell, neither am I. I traded my last Galant in on a Jeep Grand Cherokee). But I'll say this: if those Civics could hold up to the sadistic punishment these guys put them through, I KNOW that it would run more than kosher if driven even close to manufacturer's specs.

PLUS, I dunno about WV but here in FL, we're looking at $3.70 a gallon. About the only times I saw the Civics at the BP it was to get Krispy Kreme's. 'Nuff said.

That "Toyota feel" has been what keeps me out of the latest generation of front wheel drive Fords. The Taurus required a death grip on the wheel at almost all times and the new bigger Taurus has the same seating position in relation to the rest of the cockpit and controls as the Corolla/Camry/Avalon. I did not like that seating position in Vibe that I drive for 2000 miles on a road trip through New England although it was not uncomfortable. I also did not like the European style steering that requires much more effort to drive than other cars with similar handling characteristics. The Honda Civic that I had in north Jersey for a month was a much better experience.

The only depressing part of this post is that Toyota is now part owners of Subaru and working hard to merge parts bins.
