Charleston Oldies Translator

Post by Cameron »

WVRC has a STA application on file to use their current 125-watt W237AZ on 95.3 to re-broadcast WKAZ-AM 680. "It will add significant nighttime service." The daytime addition of oldies on FM in Downtown Charleston, I'm sure, was just an afterthought.

It's a better use for that translator. V-100 really doesn't need any help in Charleston.

The translator originally helped V100 downtown, but when the V100 antenna was co-located with WKAZ-FM, the downtown signal improved dramatically.

I also hear that WWNR in Beckley is "coming soon to your FM dial".

So I guess FM translators have been approved to rebroadcast AM stations.

The question is: do the ratings still count?

It's already re-broadcasting 680.

Clogging up the band to reduce competition.

Where is the translator located?

It's on the hill overlooking the Greenbriar Street exit.

I'm not a big fan of repeaters, either, but when it's legal, you go for it.

I know of one station in central WV that rebroadcasts on three different repeaters, in order to boost their weak signal

Perhaps that station should concentrate on super-serving their city of license, rather than trying to rimshot adjacent markets.

Translators are a Pox on the FM radio dial.

Dave, what you see now is not what you will get in central WV. HD, that broadcaster is trying to serve the community.
Aircheck? You'd make a great board op.

I know what's up, Dave - it's obvious they don't need the translators for the Boss. I'm just teasing them a little bit. If they're legal, it's all good.

Legal may be good, but not always right.

The irony is that the WVRC translator is getting interference from the IBOC "spatter-master" on 96.1. It could cover down to Dunbar, but it gets killed by WKWS' interference until well-past the Montrose exit.

(Of course, everything from WVPN to WQBE receives the same interference.)
