Something to ponder
Yesterday while doing some work around the house (OK while the wife was doing work around the house..I had my ass parked on the couch, drinking beer) we had the XM 80's channel on. As I have mentioned before on the 70's and 80's channels on Sundays they replay Casey Kasem's AT Top 40 shows. Yesterday's show was from April of '87. I forgot what top 40 radio used to be like. You had everything from new wave to pop to rock to ballads, etc, all on one chart. Although a great deal of music sucked in my opinion, I would have felt comfortable keeping the radio on in an office setting or whatever. There was very little if anything that I would consider "threatning". Do you guys think we will ever see a return there again?

Disco Tex and the Sex-o-lettes ??!?!?!?!?!
"Get Dancin'" was a screamer.
Now we're talking 'bout the good stuff!

There is no "Top 40" anymore.daveinthemorning wrote:Again, the point being whether it was 77 or 87 there was a time when you had all these different types of music on Top 40 radio. It seems to me that would be difficult on today's Top 40.
It's all splintered into a million sub-sub genres.

One might say Adult CHRs and Hot ACs most closely occupy that space today.daveinthemorning wrote:Again, the point being whether it was 77 or 87 there was a time when you had all these different types of music on Top 40 radio. It seems to me that would be difficult on today's Top 40.

Talk to John Conrad about this one...10. Torn Between Two Lovers » Mary MacGregor
His finest moment.20. Got To Give It Up, Pt. 1 » Marvin Gaye
Still a great sounding song.32. Couldn't Get It Right » Climax Blues Band
The hands down winner of the "Why Did You Waste That Magnificent Guitar Solo On This Song" award.33. Easy » Commodores
Sing about female hygeine products, have a Top 10 hit...36. Blinded By The Light » Manfred Mann's. Earth Band
As far as I'm concerned this is their "post-Motown" masterpiece.40. Enjoy Yourself » Jacksons
Where are these two songs on radio today? And don't give me some meaningless XM or Sirius channel number because that's not radio...48. You And Me » Alice Cooper
82. I Never Cry » Alice Cooper
Never appreciated this song until later, but what hooks.54. Strawberry Letter 23 » Brothers Johnson
Great work which should have been even a bigger hit without the "Promotional Push Of Death"64. Way Down » Elvis Presley
Marvelous one hit wonder!69. Ariel » Dean Friedman
Never a big Boz fan after he left Steve Miller, but this was the biggie for me74. Lido Shuffle » Boz Scaggs
"Hey Deanie" was the Shaun track. Ever hear his later stuff when he covered "So Sad About Us" and I even think he did "Once Bitten Twice Shy" in between Ian and Great White.79. That's Rock 'N' Roll » Shaun Cassidy
45. Da Doo Ron Ron » Shaun Cassidy
Are they bringing in Kent Tekulve???81. The Rubberband Man » Spinners
Yep, this is what disco was all about. Guess he realized he should have stuck with the skinny legs...86. Ain't Gonna Bump No More (With No Big Fat Woman) » Joe Tex
The rest? Dreck. Except maybe for "Jeans On".

You, then, should receive a promotion this afternoon. Unless your boss hates 1977...daveinthemorning wrote:I played the "Ariel" track on the "Dave's CD Case" segment of my show this morning.
Speaking of which, I'm actually coming up on my 30th anniversary of being "on the air" for the first time. Somebody play some "Take Me To The Kaptin" in observance, please...

Now, let's not get carried away, Scott! Dreck, you say? Let's reconsider...
As for Kenny Nolan's two tunes ("I Like Dreamin'" and "Love's Grown Deep") let's just say that it's always good to have a writer of his caliber put anything out there. Incidentally, Kenny wrote "Get Dancin'" by Disco Tex and the Sex-o-lettes!
Lots of merit, here.16. Whatcha Gonna Do? » Pablo Cruise
Give Stevie kudos for mentioning real musical artists in this lyric.18. Sir Duke » Stevie Wonder
Well, OK...Maynard Ferguson's was FAR better!21. Theme From "Rocky" (Gonna Fly Now) » Bill Conti
Well crafted, well performed, not gimmicky, STILL sounds good...what more could one want?67. Smoke From A Distant Fire » Sanford Townsend Band
Maybe not everyone's proverbial cup of tea, but unsurpassed musicianship (as this has) means a lot on pop tunes.87. I Wanna Get Next To You » Rose Royce
