WQWV -FM is one of the smallest stations that are members of the WVBA. but I sent three people to the Spring Meeting every year because they always come out of it pumped up, and feel they are part of the bigger picture.
I always hear stories of this or that great speaker, and lot's of new ideas just by mingling with others in the same business.
I think it's worthwhile just for the annual 'pep-talk'---and to be able to hang out with folks from larger areas with large budgets, and steal ideas that they can make into their own.
Plus-----there have been half a dozen times that I've wanted information or contacts that I couldn't find elsewhere, and Michelle Crist is ALWAYS helpful.
I have nothing negative to say about the WVBA. I could certainly do without being a member, but it's become automatic that every year my people will attend, and want to attend, which is capped off with a professionally produced awards banquet.
No, we didn't enter anything, but NEXT year will be different.
And no----- the station can't really afford it money-wise, but in the long haul, it's very worth-while just by the networking alone.
That's my two cents coming from a very small operator.
Kevin Connoley blows.

We have no problem with participating with entries, but if there areThat being said, Al, don't you want to take some of the precious revenue and give it away on the gamble that someone else will tell you what a good job you've been doing?
no categories we qualify to enter, what category do we enter?
It purely has nothing to do with money, not in our company.
We need to showcase the best locally WV produced commercials,
(not those done by outside talent).
We need a best all around locally WV produced music show,
talk show, remote broadcasts, etc.
For Example: If there is only 1 entry for the best talk show,
who exactly are you better than?
How about we set some limits like, a category must have at
least 2 entries (and not from the same people) before the
award is awarded.
I also want to make it clear that Summit Media is a member of
WVBA and they do a great job. When I have any questions for
Michele, she is right on it. The organization is top notch and
getting better each year.

I would also like to submit the following as categories for next year...
Best job of sounding like we know what the fuck we're talking about at a remote where we obviously have no business. Think Dave at any remote that talks about churches.
Best remote without using the phrases "the selection has never been better" or "no credit apps will be refused"
Best non-voice tracked weekend shift. Oops, very few entries in this catergory.

I heard one in northern Indiana a few weeks ago! A Saturday night!daveinthemorning wrote:Best non-voice tracked weekend shift. Oops, very few entries in this catergory.
The guy was...not good......stomped all over a weather jingle close (that he controlled!) and everything! But I loved it! I listened as long as I could!
An actual human being! "With me!" (Yes, he said that!)
Wow!

Fifteen Pages of Some Not Getting It
I have to agree with Al on this one, to a certain degree. There needs to be more notice of not only the Sutton stations, but also the other stations throughout the state that work very hard with nothing and yet stay on the air. The money some companies can afford to throw at awards shows, at those stations, are going to the few station employees to feed their kids and keep gas in the car. When some of us “otherâ€

Whatchout neophyte! I'm coming to steal your station! And I'm going to beat your door down with my wooden plaques! And to hell with the kids you raft down the river for! They'll just grow up to be haters anyway! And I will not retain your services either! I doubt you know what your listeners "want" to hear for a week. Better you apply for work as a tug boat captain on the Ohio. By the way, I'll need your station's address. And I'll need the plaque you won to make a couple of doorstops. Nevermind. I'll just buy some gold ones. No...I'll aquire the company that makes the gold doorstops, but that's none of your concern. Remember, I'm condescending upon you from the mountaintop.

Dear Radionowhere,
Did you just decide to ignore my post?
You conveniently SKIPPED right over it and the info given when you posted your own.
I own a station----while working at the "evil empire"----but want to at least TRY to keep my folks up to date with what is going on. A classy dinner, and "awards" banquet, is the natural end to the process. The awards (for however you interpret them) are the perfect end to the weekend.
Yes, in the big picture-----they don't mean much. A winner can be fired the next day for anything. A loser can make way more money.
Me thinks you have WAAAAAY over-thought this and I'm on Big Dawg's side and his smarmy reply on this one.

A funny thing has happened....apparently when you were trying to edit, I deleted the duplicate post (you know, lest someone from the Wheeling metro start calling you "Mel"...as in Tillis....as if accidentally clicking "submit" twice is "stuttering"). Now, neither original post is here, and you'll have to enter it a third time!
Sorry!
Seems fitting for this thread, though.....I'm so confused!
Has this gotten really weird, or is this everyday life and talk in WV?

Oh, wait....now, you've deleted the question about the double-post, and nothing makes any sense to anyone!
Cool!
By the way, it's a proud avatar!
I imagine one of those guys in it could safely be edited out, though....

Sure,
I could knock my avatar down a few sizes. MANY sizes, and if I got Connoley out of it----it'd be LOTS smaller. But now that Barney is gone, and I've found it pisses off Big Dawg, I'm leaving it alone.
I mean c'mon, this is the ONLY picture of Don Knotts with a morning show team in a golf-cart that exists in the world. (as far as you know)
Also----- I have absolutely no idea what the hell Arp is talking about.
Does anyone else?

So, I must ask, is WVBA association unreasonably priced to the point a station must choose between raises for their staff (or a staff member) or membership?
Just curious, as I didn't see a "price list" on their website.
(And to Eric's post... as a station owner that actually has an outside job paying his bills, doesn't that reduce your stations overhead to the point that maybe you can afford membership a bit easier? Wouldn't the owner/president draw the biggest paycheck, in a normal "not paid by the evil empire" situation?)

Re: Maybe we should change the name of the awards to...
I will grant that the tone of that post may have been condescending. Sorry.Cameron wrote:How condescending.Kevin Connoley wrote:How dramatic.Cameron wrote: When the awards-production is finished, you could be writing checks for $75-a-pop instead of getting production on-the-air that will keep the lights on. I mean, money going out doesn't have to balance or exceed incoming revenue.
However, I do still believe the tone of yours was quite dramatic.
I should come here more often.
