It's a stretch... I know...

Post by Lester »

Does anyone still have one of the old-school "brick" cell phones? It doesn't need to work...

The last one I saw was at a radio station, so I figured I'd give it a shot. :-)

I might - tell me more about what it looks like. There are some old cell phones in the storage shed that look late 80s/early 90s.

I still use mine every day. 10 minutes of talk time costs only $199/month. Good thing, too, cause the battery only last 10 minutes anyway.

Not to threadjack, but do the radio stations still use those bag phones that plug into the cigarette lighter jack?

Does anyone still have a car phone installed?

Lighter jack, wall-wart, and battery.

Ol' Bertha in my avitar will blast three watts (DIGITAL).

You will be able to do telephone remotes from the pits-of-hell...or Grayson...with this girl.

Eight-pounds of RF goodness.

Most of the old ones went to storage or trash since they were analog only--and the analog sites were shut down a year or two ago.

Believe the one Cameron has is digital or digital/analog. Nice, but expensive.

How much wattage does a typical cell phone put out? Data networks included?

I would imagine that it varies depending on tower distance, and whether it's GSM or CDMA.

Probably not nearly as much as those old brick phones.

I have that phone too. Got one off eBay. It's great for getting a signal out of gyms for high school basketball game broadcasts. My only complaint is that it won't do 3G, so if I find myself somewhere where I have a solid 3G signal I switch to my other handset (and force it to UMTS only mode) to get the better voice quality.

Typical cellphone is about a tenth to a quarter of a watt (100 to 250 milliwatt)

weren't handhelds authorized to be up to 600 mw at one time? I thought it was 3 watts for anything that didn't go right by the head and 600 mw for portables.

Cellular companies using CDMA/GSM technology prefer to keep mobile RF levels at a minimum...... not sure if the other carriers care or not about moblie RF levels.

About 10 - 15 years ago, I had a 360 communications motorola bag phone with analog service on it. I had our engineer; the great Elliot to wire an XLR mic jack into the microphone jack and I used it for several remotes. I had one of those 1 or 2 foot antennas with a magnet that stuck on the trunk of your car and it would pick up pretty much anywhere. The quality was 10 times better than our marti and was a lot easier to set up and tear down. I think Intellos was the last provider that would put service on it at that time. I miss those days! :D
