WBNS-TV debuting HD newscasts on April 2

Post by Dr. Whiplash »

WBNS10TV is heavily promoting its April 2 debut of Ohio's first HD newscasts and HD in general. Large insert in today's Columbus Disgrace. Here's a link to the website promo: http://www.10tv.com/?sec=hd Good non-technical explanation and relevant info.

A set change is needed because the HD cameras will show every flaw and bit of cheap construction on the set.
Lighting will have to be improved so the anchors will not show their age, Make-up too. and lastly the aspect ratio of the whole thing will need to be 16X9 instead of 4X3. But there is a problem. Unless your newscasts are going to be letterboxed when transmitted on regular analog tv, there will be a need to frame everything for 4X3. 'BNS will probably letterbox.
Their Director of Engineering is a WV native (Morgantown).
WBNS is a classy operation. Local owners.

WTVF in Nashville has HD newscasts, and from what I've seen they look very good. I can only imagine the costs involved in such a transition, though.

What about the era of local newscasts going from black-and-white to color? I asked my parents about that when visiting Nashville (and seeing the WTVF HD newscast promos), but they didn't have much knowledge about it.

WUSA 9 in DC does news in HD, also. ENG is all in 16x9.
Aircheck? You'd make a great board op.

I can tell that some of the remote stuff on WUSA is upconverted, but I don't know if all field reports are that way.

upconversion can be such a downer if the equipment producing the original signal is too old.. watching it at home like that makes the station look cheap....
